"Angela McKinney & Her Mighty Small Band is
made up of two very talented musicians from Tennessee. Their music is
stirring and impactful with a mixture of acoustic styles that are just the right
ingredients."
“Angela McKinney, front and center, it’s about time.” That’s what those who have known the native Texas Singer/Songwriter are saying. Though she has been the lead singer all her career, this is her time to mold and nurture her own creation.
Angela’s riveting vocal ability pulls you into the passion, sincerity and soulfulness that this loving and endearing spirit exudes. Her music has a style of its own, pulling from her roots in country, folk, and bluegrass music. She has found her own way by stretching the boundaries and drawing from the depths of her heart and soul to touch not just one group of people, but every person.
Angela, formerly Angela Pregeant, began her musical journey in church. Through the years she was nurtured by her musical mentors, Vicki Lynn Nichols, Valerie Ryals O’Brien, and Betty Utter. She earned a college scholarship which enabled her to pursue a major in music while, at the same time, honing her skills playing in various bands, Texas oprys, and other Texas music venues. She was part of the Texas Old Time Fiddler’s Association, which is family to some of Texas’ most recognized acoustic players.
Angela later moved to Nashville, Tennessee where she was the lead singer
and played rhythm guitar for Danger In the Air from 1990 – 2003.
This configuration of Danger In the Air was composed of Angela McKinney,
James McKinney, Scott Emerson, and Stephan Dudash.
Throughout those 13 years, the band also included Randy Howard, Kelly
Lancaster, Avent Lane, Gary Clower, Sharon Gilchrist, Boyd Deering, Matt
Wingate, and Jonathan Fly. During
this time, Danger In the Air competed in and won numerous band contests in
Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama.
One of the most respected contests in the bluegrass world is SPBGMA, in
which Danger In the Air placed 3rd in 1991.
After being seen performing at the world famous Bluebird Café, Danger In
the Air was asked to perform on the TV series, “Be a Star.”
Danger In the Air also often performed alongside legendary fiddle player
Vassar Clements. In 1992, they released their first CD entitled “The
Edge.”
In
2003 the band name was changed to James & Angela McKinney Band.
This band consisted
of Angela McKinney, James McKinney, Gary Clower, Stephan Dudash, and later
Sharon Winters Bounds, and Missy Holtman. The
James & Angela McKinney Band continued to play throughout the U.S. and as
far away as Queensland, Australia. Through
the years they opened for, or played alongside of, such notables as Tommy
Emmanuel, Bill Monroe, and John Hartford. Their
CD, “A Clear View” was released in 2004 and received great reviews.
In 2008, Angela began to pursue her own musical dreams and goals as an entertainer, singer, and songwriter with her band Angela McKinney & Her Mighty Small Band which consists of Angela and Missy Holtman. The band is based in Tennessee. In Angela’s new journey as a singer / songwriter, she has already placed in international songwriter contests with two of her songs.
Angela McKinney has an undeniably memorable talent that, along with her sincere, loving personality, will win you over again and again.

Sharing the stage and ever so
important is upright bass player, singer, and long-time friend, Missy Holtman.
She helps to round out the band’s sound with her solid playing and
harmony as well as singing lead on some tunes. Originally from Mississippi,
Missy’s musical foundation also began in church.
She fell in love with the world of bluegrass and acoustic music, and
later became a member of a band called Silver and Gold based out
of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Missy
became very active in the Alabama Bluegrass Music Association, serving as an
officer and writing for the BamaGrass, ABMA’s award-winning
publication. Missy also helped to
promote acoustic music in public elementary schools.
Missy joined the James & Angela McKinney Band in 2004, and in 2008
she teamed with Angela McKinney, becoming the Mighty Small Band part of Angela
McKinney & Her Mighty Small Band. This
innovative player will keep your attention with her fun-loving energy and
enthusiasm for their music.
